05/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Open Mat

Class #1218
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Open Mat, Wagrain, Austria - 05/01/2020

As ever, I'll combine all my rolling into one post. Though also as ever, the bulk of it was indeed at the final open mat. ;)

I did my typical approach of rolling with friends, which resulted in a good range. One experienced white belt (fun to roll with Gina again), a few times with blue belt Mina (gi and nogi), plus tough blue belt Lisia, Caroline and Nat.Then a couple of purple belts, Anna (squashed me more than last time) and very solid Vivane (narrowly escaped some chokes).

I'm still getting my back taken too often from running escape against good people. The slow motion seoinage continues to save my butt when that happens. Finished off with a black belt, Lilo, trying to stay on top. As she's better than me, I was moving much quicker than normal! 😉

Another amazing Winter Camp, with great people, great training and great memories! Not quite as memorable as last year, but I think that's because I finally managed to regulate my sleep properly. That means I didn't go into super hyper up mood like I normally do at camp. Being really hyper is a lot of fun, BUT not healthy or sustainable in the long term. So on balance, much better to avoid, as much as I look forward to that massive mood boost. Have to be careful cyclothymia doesn't tip into full bipolar, as that naturally wouldn't be good. ;D

Class #1216
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Mariusz Grzywinski, Wagrain, Austria - 05/01/2020

I thought this was going to be a sweeps class, I didn't realise it would be takedowns. So, I didn't take much in as a result. Still, it was good fun drilling with Anna, as always, fun dancing element.

05/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Lilo Asensi

Class #1217
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Lilo Asensi, Wagrain, Austria - 05/01/2020

First Lilo ran through a proper omoplata, then into escapes. The basic roll started it off, then a shoulder roll to the inside shoulder, a bit like an invert roll. You continue spinning around their leg.

İf they do that one, you can underhook and swing your leg over on the same side for another omoplata. Finally, if as you try to roll for your escape they block your hips, reach for the arm and kick through into 'diamond guard'. That opens up the triangle, armbar etc.

05/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Priit Mihkelson, turtling under mount

Class #1215
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Priit Mihkelson, Wagrain, Austria - 05/01/2020

Hooking hand frame by their hip, knock off their attempts to dislodge that hook with your other hand. Tuck neck and head tilt, do boxing stance. Elbow suck in under you by the hip, you can then turtle. Video below, if those notes don't make any sense. :P

04/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Lilo Asensi, top half guard subs

Class #1214
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Lilo Asensi, Wagrain, Austria - 04/01/2020

Sneaky wristlock when they swim for underhook. Squeezing arms together choke, my arms aren't long enough so wrist ends up in weak position. Then typical kimura, worth noting she always bases with elbow a bit above theirs, rather than behind the head.

Finished up with a straight armbar from there. Giles had a variation where he tenses bicep around it, other arm with your elbow way out to push straight down. Sakuraba option, apparently. Mike had some wristlock details too.

04/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Bryan White, Deep half

Class #1213
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Bryan White, Wagrain, Austria - 04/01/2020

Swing side to side on Faria sweep, doesn't like the bridging option as that gives them a chance to free leg.

04/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Mario Hudelist, bullfighter pass

Class #1212
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Mario Hudelist, Wagrain, Austria - 04/01/2020

Grab same side knee, palm down, grab hip. Move to the side, push knee, move around on bullfighter. Close space, driving in.

04/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Mariusz Grzywinski

Class #1211
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Mariusz Grzywinski, Wagrain, Austria - 04/01/2020

Turn hips like sitting on beach with omoplata, hip mechanics. Scooting from De la Riva. Toes into thigh on that pushing sweep.

03/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Brian Carlsen

Class #1210
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Brian Carlsen, Wagrain, Austria - 03/01/2020

Handy summary of the standard butterfly guard techniques. Brian likes to use a sleeve and belt grip, can pull in tight. Check out Adam Wardzinski, he cited him as a major source.

03/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Greg Wood, sneaky subs

Class #1209
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Greg Wood, Wagrain, Austria - 03/01/2020

Wristlock under broken scarf hold, grab their hand with non-elbow to ground arm. Push into your shoulder/chest crook, their knuckles down. Angle their elbow for wrist lock.

Subs. Grab head under side control, secure by your leg. Push their arm back and step over. Then, pull head while slowly pulling arm.

They move to pass, reach behind arm, can lock up d'arce. Fun class, and almost the last I saw of Greg for the rest of camp, as poor Greg fell ill with a nasty flu. Hence why this camp was begin referred to as Plague Camp: very fortunately for me, I managed to avoid it. My diet heavy in Nutella apparently worked. :P

03/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Charles Harriott, sweep theory

Class #1208
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Charles Harriott, Wagrain, Austria - 03/01/2020

Concept class. Move their limb, like pulling a foot back. Not sure I fully got it though, so I'm glad there's a full vid (embedded below) ;D.

02/01/2020 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Winter Camp 2020 | Mario Hudelist, x guard sweeps

Class #1207
Jugendhotel Wiederkehr, Mario Hudelist, Wagrain, Austria - 02/01/2020

Grab the leg, switch your grip, drop in. Foot on their hip, other leg hooking outside. Turn loads on side, pull leg up. Swivel arm under, into tech stand up sweep. İf they are super solid, with your hooking leg, pull yourself under and into position.

At least, those were my notes. Fortunately, looks like the filming was particularly good this camp as I think all or almost all will be on Globetrotters in Action. Vid embedded below. :D

03/08/2019 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Heidelberg 2019 | Open Mat

Class #1185
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Olympiastützpunkt Rhein-Neckar) Open Mat, Heidelberg, Germany, 03/08/2019

Amazing camp, that's going to be tough to beat! I thought Winter Camp could not be bettered, but I think Heidelcamp 2019 managed it. Especially moments like this, not sure I'll ever forget this little ditty. :P

I'll combine all the rolling to this one post. As with every camp, I held off on sparring until Thursday, to make sure I didn't pick up any annoying bumps and bruises that might have made it harder to train. First up was Thursday, then about an hour on Friday, with another hour and a bit on the Saturday.

As I missed out on rolling with her last time, I made a point of getting in spar as soon as I could. Last time we rolled, Lilo had been awake and sparring for several hours at the Hamburg GrappleThon. This time, unsurprisingly, she had a lot more energy, so I spent most of it defending from running man. I'm clearly still leaving gaps, as a number of times I was getting my back taken. Possibly I'm not blocking with the bottom arm properly, I also don't think I was twisting down towards the mat enough (the 'nipple to mat' thing Chris P talked about a while ago). She was looking to toehold me from there too, my response was generally to try and strip and grips.

I also got in rolls with Sabine, Natalie, Sara, Vera, Lisia, Katya, Anna and Mina. Most of them are smaller and less experienced than me, so I was trying to move (unsuccessfully) into that lapel guard position I learned earlier in the week. I was finding people generally just sat back down when I did that. Katya made for an interesting challenge, as she has injured shoulders and neck: that meant I didn't go for kimuras (which is normally my main goal) or chokes. Instead I just focused on control. It's always cool when you have to work inside parameters, reminds me of studying poetry. ;)

Anna is stronger than me, plus we also rolled nogi (very rare! I'll do it for Anna, but not many other people ;D). I was therefore again mostly defensive, though I did manage to get into top side control later, IIRC. Fun roll as always, Anna keeps a relaxed pace and friendly attitude, which is why I will always seek her out to spar when we're both at camps. :D

Last roll of camp for me was with Neufang, who is both bigger and a black belt. I've been curious to roll with him for a while, as not only is he a chilled out kind of guy, he has an extremely unusual game. Very flexible and creative, his legs suddenly appear from unexpected angles. I'd be trying my A game, north south to kimura approach, then I'd found myself caught in some weird submission. Entertaining! Followed that up with a matside tattoo, courtesy of Alex (as I've been wanting to both get inked at a camp and try out bottom of the foot tattoos. Likely to fade, but only one way to find out ;D).

03/08/2019 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Heidelberg 2019 | Mike Hartmann, deep half

Class #1184
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Olympiastützpunkt Rhein-Neckar) Mike Hartmann, Heidelberg, Germany, 03/08/2019

Deep half. Various entries. You can swing in from knee shield, shooting under the leg for waiter sweep position. Hide your arm. İf they don't give you any grips, you can grab the belt and use that to pull them off balance, then shoot underneath.

Mike also demonstrated how you can swivel into deep half when they butterfly sweep you. Just a matter of timing, swivelling under as they bring you over with their leg.

İnverting. Drill for drilling butterfly.sweep. Then much more complex imanari roll. Again, watch video! 😉

02/08/2019 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Heidelberg 2019 | Oli Geddes, 50/50 footlocks

Class #1182
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Olympiastützpunkt Rhein-Neckar) Oli Geddes, Heidelberg, Germany, 02/08/2019

50/50. İnitially escape is simple,.you stiff ark.and hip.away. After that, got collapse. All sorts of stuff where you're cutting your straight footlock grip, I got confused. I was also wary of the pain compliance of some, or the heel hook counter risk.of.others. Need to watch video, when that's up on the BJJ Globetrotters site.

02/08/2019 - BJJ Globetrotter Camp | Heidelberg 2019 | Greg Wood, skywalker pass

Class #1181
BJJ Globetrotter Camp (Olympiastützpunkt Rhein-Neckar) Greg Wood, Heidelberg, Germany, 02/08/2019

Passing. İn a fourth connected lesson, this time the pass contest was mainly the classic starting from knees position. Grab a collar tie, pelting your opposite foot (I think opposite?). They may or may not be gripping your arm: of they are, open up.that arm by raising the elbow. Shoot your non posting let into that gap. You want your shin over their stomach. Once that is in place, it's a simple push off your post, to 'float' into.onee on belly.

Note that this will depend on their knee position. İf is low enough, you can go.r8ght over the top. A bit higher, you might need to.gp.around the side a bit. (F their knee is too.high for all.that, you can probably push it to collapse the legs or a quick.bullfighter type motion.

Another option might be (e.g., from.closed guard, versus butterfly etc) conspire over in a quick knee cut. Opening closed guard into combat base presents that floating knee cut, as might butterfly, or when you've reacted to a counter to.your hip.bump. You might also be able.to.swiftly adjust directly into.the shin on stpmach float, depends on how flexible.and fluid you are.

I later had a go at teaching this myself, back home at Artemis BJJ:
