21/06/2019 - Friday daytime, standing up to break closed guard

Class #1161
Artemis BJJ (Easton Road), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 21/06/2019

This is what I'm going to teach on Monday, standard stuff. It would be interesting to think more about what happens when they do a sit up and stare at you after you stand: doesn't happen often, but it did earlier this week. Either you'll shake them open, or sometimes the other person will disengage and it would become a standing battle.

I guess if I was continuing that movement, I'd probably recommend going straight into an ankle pick or some other kind of takedown, but that's kinda outside the remit of closed guard. Still worth thinking about though, I'll be interested to see if it comes up in class.

Thought I'd also give Saulo's variations a go. He shows how you can open the guard from a squat, pushing back from that. That's handy, as it provides an inbetween option, along with standing and kneeling. If you grab both their hands and base through that, possibly more effective? I'll have to test this in sparring some time. I'm not sure how it will stand up to resistance, but something to attempt.
