Class #876
Artemis BJJ (MYGYM Bristol), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 17/08/2017

Went through some of the Chelsea seminar material with Sam, particularly the breadcutter choke variation. Although we just went through the usual breadcutter choke, as I find that one a lot less mean than the version Chelsea showed. Her option is highly likely to crush the windpipe, as it is square on, rather than attempting to turn the head in order to drive an arm into the side of the neck.

We also spoke about the stacking pass and its dangers. Again, the version Chelsea showed involved an extreme stack where the legs are driven right over the head. Although she did make a point of emphasising that you don't have to crush down, a large white belt finding themselves in that same position would be a very iunpleasaqnt scenario for the person underneath. Good technique in terms of efficacy, but not something I would want to use due to how easily it could hurt somebody if done with any kind of force.

Therefore, Matt and I suggested some options for attempting to reduce the danger of that position. Like Chelsea said herself, the first thing to try is heavy legs, widening your knees and trying to push your feet towards the ground. Matt also mentioned that pulling your head back will make it harder for somebody to stack you, as your back is no longer curved (which is what happens if you give in to the instinctual need to look at what your partner is doing).
