02/05/2017 - Open Mat (Tuesday)

Class #818
Artemis BJJ (MYGYM Bristol), Can Sönmez, Bristol, UK - 02/05/2017

Bank holiday meant no training on Monday, which was also a handy extra rest for my various injuries. I kept that rest going today, but still managed to painfully jar my finger somehow. Annoying that just knocking it can hurt, but that does remind me: BUDDY TAPE! Third time I've forgotten to do it. ;)

Anyway, main thing I did today was learn an interesting follow-up to a north-south kimura that Matt saw somewhere on his video wanderings (he has a good eye for them: despite most of his training being open mat these days, he keeps makings leaps forward. Impressive!). It's apparently called the Roman Emperor choke, due to it relying on a motion where you point your thumb down. Grip across above the neck. Your other arm drops down, pull the gi to take out the slack. Then you can drop down, pushing into the head to finish it off. I'll need to play with it some more, looked like a fun option.

I also ran through some half guard with Josh, showing the basics of top and bottom. He learns quick: already felt pretty strong on top after a few details. :)
