08/12/2015 - Open Mat | Spider Guard

Class #685
Artemis BJJ (MYGYM Bristol), Open Mat, Bristol, UK - 08/12/2015

It's getting nearer to xmas now and class sizes are therefore getting smaller. Tuesday is generally the smallest class, but there are stalwarts, like Tracey. We went through spider guard today, as Tracey was looking for an open guard game that would be a good fit for her: spider guard was something that piqued her interest after being shown it by Tom at the Pedro Bessa GrappleThon a while ago. I used to play a lot of spider guard, but have since weaned myself off it due to the grips. I don't think it will work for me long term on a regular basis, because my fingers aren't up to it.

However, it is nevertheless an excellent guard and great for control. The main thing I wanted to show Tracey was the importance of keeping your partner off-balance, twisting their torso to make them more worried about falling over than how they are going to pass. The lasso grip is something I used a lot in the past, as it can be a real pain to pass, though again it relies on having that good grip. Standard spider guard works well too, as long as you keep that tension in your extended leg while also pulling in with the other leg.

At least I think that's what we did today: I'm writing this up after a week, so still catching up. Tends to happen when JJS deadlines come around, especially as I was also off to my family xmas (which we decided to do on the 12th this year, because a bunch of us are abroad on actual xmas ;D).
