Artemis BJJ (PHNX Fitness), Open Mat, Bristol, UK - 23/05/2015
Open mat involved a lot of competition preparation, as for the first time there are Artemis BJJ students interesting in testing themselves in a tournament. I've never been a big competitor myself (given that I've competed a whole once, way back in 2007), but it will be cool to see how the stuff I've been teaching works out in that environment. It also means I get the new experience of being a coach.
Of course, when I say 'competition preparation', I don't mean there was loads of super hard sparring and cardio. I just mean we went through the game plan and worked more on those techniques. I'm intending to add in a bunch more specific sparring, so people can try and further refine what they want to attempt on the competition mats.
I got in some sparring with the visiting purple belt (who was very useful to have there for further tips, as unlike me he does compete a lot). Main thing was grabbing the leg to stop back takes: he kept going for some kind of berimbolo type thing, so I focused on blocking the leg he was looking to swing through. I also tried getting the kimura grip, but not very successfully.
