This website is about Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ). I'm a black belt who started in 2006, teaching and training at Artemis BJJ in Bristol, UK. All content ©Can Sönmez

29/11/2014 - Artemis BJJ | Open Mat

Class #608
Artemis BJJ (PHNX Fitness), Open Mat, Bristol, UK - 29/11/2014

The commercial pleasures of Black Friday have officially migrated from the States to the UK, with loads of sales online and offline (plenty of BJJ options listed here). So, as I think quite a few students were taking advantage of the retail bonanza, small open mat today, which I mostly spent helping out the stalwarts who did pop along.

It was useful for me to get in some nogi sparring at the end. I don't like training without the gi, as it takes away so much of the fun stuff (collar chokes, wrapping people up in their own, sticking lapels between legs etc), but at least it gives my fingers a rest. Although I've done loads of stuff on the guard this week, that was all about the gi and particularly collar grips. In nogi, that's obviously not going to work too well.

So instead, I've been trying a gable grip around the shoulder when I'm in nogi. Though I'm probably forgetting the proper way to grab. Looking back at my notes on No Gi Essentials, I again need to be scooting off to the side. With the gi, I can grip in the collar and push on the elbow to help that. With the shoulder grip, I haven't worked out how best to shift off to the side. One thing at a time, I guess: nogi is low priority for me, after all. ;)
